Computing
Intent
At James Oglethorpe Primary School, our intent is to ensure all pupils become confident, creative, and responsible users of technology. Through the Rising Stars Switched on Computing scheme, we provide a progressive, engaging curriculum that:
-
Builds computational thinking and coding skills from EYFS to Year 6 in a spiral model.
-
Encourages children to use technology to create, collaborate, and problem-solve across the curriculum
-
Promotes digital resilience and online safety, enabling pupils to become responsible digital citizens.
-
Equips pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital to succeed in a rapidly evolving digital world.
We want our children to leave James Oglethorpe Primary with not only the skills to thrive in the future workplace but also the wisdom to use technology positively, safely, and ethically.
Implementation
We implement our computing curriculum through the Rising Stars Switched on Computing scheme, adapted to meet the needs of our pupils and the wider school community.
-
Structured Progression – Lessons follow a spiral curriculum, revisiting and building on prior knowledge in coding, digital literacy, and information technology.
-
Practical, Cross-Curricular Learning – Pupils apply computing skills in meaningful contexts (e.g., creating animations linked to literacy, data handling in maths, or digital art in topic work).
-
Inclusivity and Accessibility – Lessons are scaffolded to support all learners, with opportunities for challenge and creativity for higher attainers.
-
Teacher Confidence – Staff are supported by detailed planning, CPD videos, and online resources from Rising Stars to ensure high-quality teaching.
-
Online Safety – E-safety is embedded throughout the scheme and reinforced during Safer Internet Day and PSHE lessons, reflecting our safeguarding culture.
Technology is integrated into everyday learning, with pupils using a range of devices (PCs, iPads, and interactive whiteboards) as well as cloud-based platforms to share and celebrate their work.
Impact
The impact of computing at James Oglethorpe Primary School is measured through:
-
Pupil Outcomes – Children produce high-quality digital work and demonstrate secure understanding of key concepts.
-
Assessment for Learning – Quizzes, pupil self-evaluation, and teacher observation track progress across year groups.
-
Digital Portfolios – Pupils build a body of work that evidences progression in programming, creativity, and digital literacy.
-
Pupil Voice – Learners talk confidently about computing, show enthusiasm for coding and digital projects, and understand how to keep themselves safe online.
-
Readiness for the Future – By Year 6, pupils are digitally literate, able to apply computational thinking to real-world problems, and prepared for the next stage of their education.
Ultimately, our pupils leave James Oglethorpe Primary with the skills and confidence to flourish in an ever-changing technological landscape, while making positive contributions as responsible, safe, and creative digital citizens.
