English

Intent

At James Oglethorpe Primary School, we believe that a high-quality English curriculum is the foundation of successful learning across the curriculum. Our intent is to develop confident, articulate and enthusiastic readers, writers and speakers. We want our pupils to foster a lifelong love of literature, to express themselves clearly and creatively, and to use language effectively in a wide range of contexts. By the time they leave us, children will have the literacy skills needed to thrive academically and socially, preparing them for the next stage of their education and beyond.

Implementation

Our English curriculum is carefully planned to ensure progression in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and spoken language.

  • Reading: We prioritise early reading through systematic phonics teaching and provide rich opportunities for reading across the curriculum. Children are exposed to high-quality texts that inspire, challenge and reflect diversity. Guided, shared and independent reading help pupils develop fluency, comprehension and a love of books.

  • Writing: Writing is taught through a clear sequence of planning, drafting, editing and publishing. Pupils are given purposeful opportunities to write for a range of audiences and purposes, supported by explicit teaching of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.

  • Speaking and Listening: Oracy is at the heart of our curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to express ideas, debate, perform and present confidently.

  • Cross-Curricular Links: English is embedded across subjects, ensuring that literacy skills are constantly practised and applied. Teachers use a wide variety of approaches, including model texts, shared writing and scaffolding, to support and challenge all learners.

Impact

The impact of our English curriculum is seen in pupils who are confident readers, imaginative writers and articulate speakers. Assessments, pupil voice and outcomes in books demonstrate that children make strong progress from their starting points. They develop resilience, creativity and critical thinking, and take pride in their achievements. By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils are well-prepared for secondary school, equipped with the literacy skills and love of learning that will support them throughout their lives.
