Foreign Languages
Intent
At James Oglethorpe Primary School, we believe that learning French provides an opening to other cultures, fosters curiosity and deepens understanding of the wider world. Our intent is to ensure that every child develops a foundation in spoken and written French, enabling them to communicate with growing confidence and enjoyment. We aim to nurture enthusiasm for learning languages, build strong linguistic knowledge, and instil respect and appreciation for cultural diversity. By developing their skills in French, children also strengthen their literacy, memory, and problem-solving abilities, preparing them for future language learning at secondary school and beyond.
Implementation
We follow the Language Angels scheme of work, which provides a clear, progressive curriculum from Year 3 to Year 6.
-
Curriculum design: Lessons are sequenced to ensure prior learning is built upon, and skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing are developed over time.
-
Teaching approach: Interactive resources, songs, stories and games engage children in active learning. Pupils are encouraged to practise pronunciation, use new vocabulary in context, and develop grammatical awareness.
-
Progression: Children begin with simple words and phrases before progressing to longer sentences, conversations and written passages. The scheme supports all learners by providing a balance of repetition and challenge.
-
Cultural awareness: Lessons also explore French customs, festivals and traditions, helping pupils to appreciate and celebrate the richness of another culture.
Impact
As a result of our French curriculum, children leave James Oglethorpe Primary with a secure foundation in a modern foreign language and a positive attitude towards language learning. They develop confidence in speaking and listening, as well as the ability to read and write simple French with increasing accuracy. Pupil voice and lesson outcomes show that children enjoy French and can apply their skills in meaningful contexts. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are prepared to continue their language journey at secondary school with enthusiasm and curiosity about the wider world.
