Music

Intent

At our school, we want every child to enjoy and appreciate music. Our music curriculum aims to develop creativity, confidence, and a love of performing. Through singing, playing instruments, listening, and composing, children learn to express themselves and understand the power of music in everyday life. We aim to make music accessible to all and to celebrate the joy it brings to our school community.

Implementation

Music is taught in a practical and engaging way across all year groups. Children take part in singing, rhythm games, and instrumental work using tuned and untuned percussion. They listen to music from different times, places, and cultures to broaden their understanding of the world. As pupils move through the school, they build key musical skills such as keeping a steady beat, recognising pitch, reading simple notation, and performing as part of a group. Opportunities to perform are provided through assemblies, concerts, and special events. We also make use of digital tools to support creativity and composition.

Impact

By the end of primary school, children develop confidence as performers, composers, and listeners. They learn to work together, express ideas creatively, and appreciate different styles of music. Music helps to build their concentration, coordination, and wellbeing. Our pupils leave primary school with a strong foundation in music and an enthusiasm that encourages further participation in musical activities as they move into secondary education.
